Check Your Gauge!

Today I learned the valuable lesson on what happens when you do not check your gauge. If you have not noticed, the timing of my posts is irregular, and sometimes I even post twice on the same day. This is because Cute Crochet and Knifty Knits began as a project for the Business Management class I am taking. Believe it or not, I am a prokrastiknitter, and consequently, the actual blog writing sometimes gets pushed to a couple hours before the assignment is due. Today, though, I actually was ahead on work. My plan was to crochet a pair of booties this afternoon, write about how it went, and even list them on the website. But of course, that is not what happened.

I grabbed Crochet One-Skein Wonders for Babies and paged through it until I found a pair of booties that seemed relatively easy: “Baby Mukluks.” The pattern only calls for one color, but my roommate and I were listening to Christmas music, so I decided to be festive and use the left-over yarn from the Paper Dolls Stocking mentioned in my previous post. I began the first booty knowing full well that my crochet stitches tend to be tighter than my knitting.

As far as the actual pattern goes, it is a bit confusing because it does not tell you to chain one at the beginning of each round, but I assume it expects one to do so. I also tried something new: crocheting an instep. I have knit the instep for stockings, so I knew conceptually what I was doing, but I was so tense, and my stitches were so small that I kept hurting my hand trying to push the hook through the loops. As I finished the instep and began the cuff, it was clear that this booty would not be fitting any human baby, though it might fit an American Girl Doll or make a nice Christmas ornament. At least messing up gave me something to write about!

I added a loop, and now it looks like a mini–Christmas Stocking.

Below is a link to Crochet One-Skein Wonders for Babies. So far, the only other project I have made is the “Precious Hearts” booties, but they turned out well, and the rest of the patterns look cute.
