What are the Koalafications?

I like to knit and crochet a variety of things, but that does not mean I am an expert in every aspect. I still have a long way to go when it comes to amigurumi. I find it relatively easy to develop my own sweater patterns because they all have the same basic shape. There are some patterns in amigurumi for increasing and decreasing, but the patterns will look different for say a doll versus a buffalo. Mini Knitted Safari by Sachiyo Ishii is one of a series of knitted amigurumi patterns. So far I have made a few of the animals, including the mamma and baby koala bears.

I wanted to make my grandmother a birthday present but (as usual) I did not think about it until the day before her birthday. I decided to make her the mamma and baby koala because I knew I could make something that small in a day. I grabbed the gray worsted weight yarn since I did not have any of the recommended light worsted weight yarn. For those of you who don’t know the difference, I essentially used thicker yarn than recommended. This was not a problem until I had to sew the koala together and it was too thick to turn it right side out. By now it was almost time to get in the car and drive to my grandmother’s house. I snipped the poor koala and began again. This time I split the yarn in half so it would not be as thick. The trick worked, and I finished sewing it as we pulled into my grandmother’s driveway.

This is a picture of the completed koalas.

And this is a picture of one of the other patterns: the buffalo. As you can see, I am still learning.
