Basketball

Crocheting and knitting can be used for a wide variety of projects: the only limitations are your imagination and your budget. For example, when I crochet a basketball net, the only reason it did not last long was because the sturdiest thing I had for a hoop was a thin metal hanger.

Why would I crochet a basketball hoop? Well this was just another one of those things I did to remain sane during quarantine. All of the nets had been removed from the local basketball courts. As much as I love knitting and crocheting, I can’t sit down forever. I made up my mind that I was going to play basketball, and that nothing was going to stop me.

I took a wire hanger from my closet, untwisted it, and formed it into a giant loop. Then I took what I thought to be ugly yarn and crochet around the wire. I had also used the same yarn to make a scarf which my sisters said I might be able to sell if I called it, “2020 in a scarf.” I chained ten stitches or so, then joined the chain to the round to create the traditional basketball hoop look. After that came the tricky part of finding the correct place to attach the net. I had to settle on a tree branch about eight feet high over the sidewalk.

Once the net was attached, I persuaded my brother to play basketball with me. The net would have held up well if we were skilled enough to actually make all the shots we took. But since most of our shots hit the net instead of going into the basket, the wire kept getting mangled. After fixing it a couple times, I went inside to continue doing my homework.

I cannot remember if we played with it anymore after that, but I took it down from the tree within a day or two. I totally forgot about it until I saw this picture while looking through my camera roll.

The basketball hoop in Its short lived glory.

As always, if you want to stay in the loop, follow FBD artistry on social media. I also take commissions and post in progress pictures of said commissions..
