The Little Blue Bag

This is my project bag. There aren't many like it, and this one is mine. It’s name changes depending on what is in it. When it contains a knitting project, it is my knitting bag. When it contains a crochet project, it is my crochet bag. On the rare occasion that I decide to travel with embroidery or a small sewing project, it becomes my sewing bag. I take it with me almost everywhere.

I sewed this bag when I was 14 years old. The problem was that I was going on a flight and I did not have a carry on bag suitable for the crochet project I was working on at the time. I wanted to be able to keep the yarn in the bag, but also be able to pull the yarn out bit by bit. For this reason I decided upon the drawstring design.

Like any reasonable person, I grabbed a pot and traced it for the bottom of the bag. Obviously I put some crochet hook pockets and a scissor pocket on the interior of the bag. I did not have enough fabric to make the lining and the exterior the same color, so I was required to spend several minutes deciding whether I wanted a light or dark exterior. Finally I decided to go with a light blue exterior and darker blue for the interior. I cut the fabric strips for the drawstrings long enough to go around the outside of the bag, but, per usual, I forgot to leave room for seam allowance to tie them together. Instead of restarting the strings, I sewed some almost matching blue ribbon to each end of the strings to tie them together. So far they have only come untied once!

This is the first project that I carried in my little blue bag. You can click on the picture to view more details about the blanket.

Since then this little bag has been everywhere with me: from home to school, from the beach to the mountains, from the road to the sky, from Hawaii to Italy. I often clip my little blue bag to my back pack with a D ring; I would like to apologize to anyone I may have accidentally walloped with the bag while walking around. While I have expanded my collection of totes and even procured one duffel bag for larger projects and a waterproof bag for kayaking, my little blue bag is still dear to my heart. Do you have a primitive project that is so dear to you that you could never give it up or take it apart to make something else with it? Feel free to comment below!

In other news, the knit and crochet along that had been postponed will begin on Monday November 8th. Once again, here are the books that we will be using.
