None the Weezer

Great news everyone: I finally figured out how to allow comments, so if you enjoyed the previous two posts and wanted to leave a comment, and were utterly disappointed that you couldn’t, today is your lucky day! You can comment on this post, and the previous two posts!

When I was thinking of an idea for this blog, I had aspirations of sharing comical stories about times I have messed up while crocheting and knitting. “But I don’t make that many mistakes,” I said to myself. I guess I jinxed myself because I have made a few substantial mistakes recently. In the words of my dear friend, “I’m not superstitious, I’m just a little stitious.”

This is an adorable sweater that I have made several times using Idiot’s Guides: Knitting Sweaters. This pattern is simple and straightforward. I recommend this pattern if you want to get the basic idea of how a sweater works on the small scale before moving on to a larger garment. It is a swift project that could be completed in a weekend provided one has the focus to sit and knit all weekend and not take a break to play basketball.

After making this sweater and one or two (or nine) for myself I realized that if I knit in the round, I could avoid the aggravating task of sewing the pieces together. In fact, the unfinished projects in my project basket (or enormous project hoard enveloping two thirds of my room) became jealous after being cast aside indefinitely for this very reason that is no fault of their own. Next I recognized that since I crochet several baby dresses and one summer top in the round from the top down, I am clearly ready to ace knitting a sweater from the bottom up.

After pulling all my pattern books off the shelf and deliberating for a lengthy time, I decided to use the “Lace Panel Sweater” pattern from Idiots Guides: Knitting Sweaters. This is the first sweater I’m making that is not a rectangle, but rather involves shaping for the hips. It is tricky to simultaneously keep track of which row I’m on for the lace pattern and which row of the shaping. But I successfully made it to the part where the sleeves get added on.

Knitting on the way to college.

I do not have the patience to teach people to knit, but I do it anyway. I was working on this sweater while teaching two of my friends to knit. Since they are my friends, I was honest about how impeccable their skills were. One friend made an uneven rectangle, while the other did not make it beyond casting on because the stitches kept sliding off the needles. I thought I was so cool because I was working on a project while teaching rookies how to knit. I was even joining sleeves— a task I had never done before— while giving instructions. Once I was a row or two past the sleeve joint, I realized my utter mistake: I had set aside 4 stitches where the pattern said to set aside 6 stitches. Since I was in public, I had to remain sane, so I tucked the project in my knitting duffel bag. There it remained for the next week until I finally got around to taking out the sleeves and reattaching them.

This was when I made my next big mistake: I forgot to listen to Undone by Weezer as I pulled the sweater apart. I have included the link below so that you do not have to make the same mistake.
