Crochet Beanie

Fall is here! With the cold weather it is the perfect time for hats and scarves. I love hats! They combine my three favorite things: fun to make, practical, and enjoyable to show off— provided your design is head and shoulders above the rest.

When I was young(er than I am now), I really wanted I beret, so I figured I would crochet my own. At this point, the only crochet stitch I knew was the double crochet. I decided I would put two double crochet stitches in each stitch of the previous round until the hat was large enough to fit my head. At that point, I crochet in the round until it was long enough. Obviously I misjudged the size of my head and ended up with a hat that was much too large to be worn by any person.

I pulled the hat apart most of the way and continued again making it smaller. Unfortunately there is no song to play while pulling apart a hat. If you discover one, please let me know! After I finished the hat, I still did not have a beret, but rather a beanie. The beanies that are available in the shop are a slight variation of that original beanie. I do not know what happened to the original beanie, but here is a picture of my sisters and I sporting some snazzy items that are available in the shop.

Robert Louis Stephenson wrote many wonderful children’s poems, but not enough about crocheting or knitting. For your enjoyment, I have revised one of his poems, “My Shadow.”

“But what about the beret?” you ask? I finally made one over quarantine. Keep a look out for the next post to hear that story. As always, to stay in the loop, you can follow FBD artistry on social media.

Below are links to some of my favorite yarn for beanies. I also enjoy using up scrap yarn by making multi-colored beanies.
